The Benefits of Reading for Kids

Reading books for kids has many benefits. If you do not have kids, get one! You can read for your kids, your siblings, your nephews and nieces, or your grandsons and granddaughters depending on your age!

Reading for kids has many neurological, educational, psychological, social and linguistic advantage. Some of the benefits include:

  • Stronger bonds: spending intimate time with your kids strengthen bonds between reader and the kids. Any time is good for reading books but especially at bedtime because kids nowadays are busy most of the time with TV, video games or smart phones. Scholastic calls reading "a gift for busy parents who may feel guilty about missing special moments with their kids."
  • Better vocabulary: both of you will learn the meaning of more words, their spelling and proper pronunciation which mean better understanding of language as well as academic success.
  • Better grammar: the best way to learn grammar is not a grammar book but more and more reading! You know grammar when you feel that "something" is wrong and not because you have memorized a grammar rule!
  • Love of books: by regularly reading best books for kids, you will engross the love books and reading in them.
  • More knowledge: you and kids will learn at least something new from a book!
  • Doing better at school: children who read books are ahead of peers at school by an average of six month to a year depending on how much they read!
  • Enhancing creativity and imagination: reading a book is like a journey with a wise man! Einstein says: "If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales!"
  • Exercising our brain: use it or loose it applies both to our muscle as well as brain cells!
  • Developing empathy: because they encounter many situations and characters in the story so we are feeling what they are feeling!
  • Practice makes perfect: kids love reading the same book over and over! This will help both of you will develop better listening skills!
  • Habit forming: you may say I do not have time to read books! But if you make it a habit to read for kids, you are also more likely to read other books!
  • Stronger Self-esteem: both of you will have stronger self-confidence!
  • Great form of entertainment: in addition of all the above mentioned benefits, kids also enjoy reading books for them especially at bedtime!
