Go home or go to home?

In English, we do not use "to" before "home" because in this sentence, "I will go home", home is not a noun but an adverb.

This is one of the common mistakes and may be a bit tricky for ESL learners because in many other languages "to" is used in such sentences.

Below is a list of such adverbs:

  • home
  • here
  • there
  • in
  • out
  • inside
  • outside
  • abroad
  • upstairs
  • downstairs
  • anywhere
  • nowhere
  • somewhere
  • underground
Here are some examples:
  • I will go to home. → I will go home.
  • Let us go to outside. → Let us go outside.
  • Come to here. → Come here.
  • He will travel to abroad next week. → He will travel abroad next week.
